The idea is to scientifically prove the physiological miracle of yoga

— something like searching for a personal Holy Grail for Professor Christopher Streeter, who led the research team from Boston. In 2007, The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine appeared her first job, in which Streeter suggested that asanas stimulate the production of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the body. This amino acid inhibits nerve impulses, improves blood circulation — in a word, is a natural sedative. Nootropic drugs (for example, aminalon, gammalon) prescribed in systemic disorders of memory, attention, language, as antidepressants but they are not used. New research published in the latest issue of the same journal, confirmed that, firstly, the level of GABA is associated with the mechanism of depression, and secondly, this level can be increased through yoga.

The experiment involved 52 people, but to the finish reached only 34: not everyone has the patience to train three times a week for an hour. Selected volunteers in the following principles: age from 18 to 45 years, with no apparent health problems; not attending therapist not attending prayer meetings, not a practitioner close to yoga discipline — Pilates and other modifications fitness programs body&mind. Strictly excluded those who practiced yoga in the previous three months, or ever her intensively practiced. And, of course, smokers and alcoholics.

The participants were divided into two groups: some were for 12 weeks to devote three hours of yoga, others — intensive walking on the treadmill, all under the supervision of coaches. During the experiment, participants made three MRI (one at the beginning, two, respectively, at the end), and several times tested Spielberg on anxiety level and is regularly interviewed about the mood. According to the test results, the group engaged in yoga, I felt much more energetic, calmer and happier than those who engaged in walking. In addition, MRI yogis were markedly increased the level of gamma-aminobutyric acid. Presumably, it contributed to the improvement of mood and tone.

There are nuances that do not allow to draw final conclusions on the basis of this study. First, the participants were too few. Secondly, none of them suffered from any mental disorders, it is impossible to judge, “cures” of yoga, for example, from depression. Scientists suggest that yoga does not allow it to develop. One thing is clear: if further, more extensive studies will confirm these results, doctors will prescribe yoga as treatment for depression along with medication.

Neuropsychologist Yuri Petrov is convinced that these findings relate only to long time yoga practitioner people. Top model Natalia Vodianova sure that yoga is not a race for the perfect body. The owner of the clubs Complete Body Alex Reznik believes that any training should end with a meditation. Businessman Andrey Uspensky switched from karate to yoga because I was sick of the injury. Amateur marathons Maria IMAS assured that running at a sporting pace — antidepressant yoga not worse
